Reading to Primary English Tuition | I Can Read

Written by I Can Read Singapore | 05 Oct 2026

Parents often start by searching for an “English enrichment class”, then discover they need to ask a more specific question: is their child developing early literacy skills, learning to read independently and understand texts, preparing for Primary 1, or strengthening Primary English skills?

These needs are related, but they call for different support. A child who struggles to decode unfamiliar words has a different need from one who reads fluently but finds school comprehension questions challenging. I Can Read’s pathways consider reading ability for literacy programmes, readiness for Primary 1, and school level and skill gaps for Primary English.

The short route: Start with your child’s current needs: early literacy, independent reading and comprehension, K2 school readiness, or Primary English. An English Assessment helps determine the appropriate literacy level or identify Primary English skill gaps. Ask the centre which programme suits your child and which classes are available.

Before confident reading: Reading Foundations

Reading Foundations develops the pre-reading skills children need before formal reading. Children learn to recognise sounds within words, build vocabulary and engage with stories, laying the foundations for independent reading.

If your child enjoys stories but is still developing sound awareness and letter–sound understanding, a reading assessment helps determine the appropriate starting level in this ability-based programme.

The guide to what phonics is and how it fits into reading explains the sound-to-print step. If you are comparing providers, use the phonics class selection checklist to ask about teaching and progression.

Building reading skills: Champion Readers

Champion Readers guides children towards confident, independent reading across six progressive levels. Levels 1–3 build decoding, vocabulary and oral comprehension. Levels 4–6 strengthen reading fluency, written comprehension, grammar and communication.

Children learn to decode unfamiliar words using I Can Read’s diacritical marking system, with markings gradually removed as reading becomes more independent. Placement is based on literacy ability rather than age, with an English Assessment determining the appropriate starting level.

Our guide to signs a child is struggling to read gives parents specific observations to bring to an assessment. A primary school child can still need reading support; year level alone does not settle the choice.

Getting ready for school: Headstart to Primary 1

Headstart to Primary 1 prepares K2 children for the expectations of Primary School English. Building on reading and language foundations, it strengthens comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, sentence construction, writing and spelling, alongside speaking and presentation skills.

Through engaging lessons and meaningful practice, children build confidence for the transition to Primary 1.

If Primary 1 is approaching, the school-readiness checklist separates reading, writing, listening, speaking and independent work so you can discuss the actual gap.

In primary school: Primary English tuition

For children in Primary 1–6, I Can Read’s Primary English Programme combines structured language development with school and assessment readiness. It develops listening, speaking, reading and writing, with grammar and vocabulary at the core, as learning demands grow.

In Primary 1–2, Set the PACE builds accuracy and confidence through stories, sentence construction and active communication. In Primary 3–5, STEP in the Right Direction strengthens English mastery through progressive practice, writing techniques and increasingly challenging exam-style questions. In Primary 6, LEAP Ahead prepares students for PSLE and beyond through targeted practice, exam strategies and Paper 1 and Paper 2 mock examinations.

This pathway supports children in strengthening school English, expressing ideas confidently and preparing for assessment

A simple way to decide

Start with your child’s current skills and learning stage:

  • Still developing pre-reading skills, such as recognising sounds within words? Explore Reading Foundations.
  • Ready to develop decoding, independent reading and comprehension? Explore Champion Readers.
  • In K2 and preparing for Primary School English? Explore Headstart to Primary 1.
  • In Primary 1–6 and looking to strengthen English skills and assessment readiness? Explore the Primary English Programme.

These are starting points rather than placement recommendations. Literacy placement is based on ability, while Primary English follows your child’s school level and addresses their skill gaps. An English Assessment helps determine the appropriate literacy level or identify areas needing attention in Primary English. Use Find Our Centre to check nearby programmes and class availability.

Frequently asked questions

Is English enrichment for preschoolers the same as Primary English tuition? No. Preschool programmes develop early literacy and school readiness. I Can Read’s Primary English Programme strengthens language skills and assessment readiness for Primary 1–6.

Can a primary school child join a reading programme? Yes. Literacy placement depends on reading ability rather than age. A reading assessment determines the appropriate level, while a Primary English assessment identifies skill gaps within the child’s school level.

Should I choose a centre before a programme? Consider both your child’s learning needs and a convenient location. Ask the centre which suitable programmes and class times are available before enrolling.
