The I Can Read Primary English Programme (PEP) is built on five integrated pillars that develop every aspect of English proficiency. From mastering language conventions and understanding texts to writing effectively, speaking confidently, and applying English purposefully in real-world contexts.

Together, these pillars prepare students not only for success in the PSLE, but also to become confident, capable communicators for life.

At the heart of the programme is I Can Read's strong reading DNA, which has been thoughtfully preserved and extended into the primary years through explicit instruction in reading comprehension, vocabulary development, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of reading as the foundation for language success.

Primary 1 & 2

Your child will begin developing essential reading and writing skills. They will:

  • Strengthen comprehension and vocabulary.
  • Learn to write short paragraphs clearly.
  • Understand and apply basic grammar rules.
  • Build confidence through storytelling and simple presentation activities.

Primary 3 & 4

As your child progresses, they will refine and expand their skills. They will:

What is the Primary English programme?
Primary English is I Can Read’s English enrichment programme for children in Primary 1 to Primary 6. The programme develops the four core language skills—listening, speaking, reading and writing—through structured lessons that combine clear instruction, guided practice, independent learning and ongoing feedback.
Which primary levels does Primary English cover?

The programme is tailored to the learning needs of each stage of primary school:

  • Primary 1 & 2: Build strong foundations in reading, writing, vocabulary and grammar.
  • Primary 3 & 4: Develop comprehension, analytical thinking, writing and communication skills.
  • Primary 5 & 6: Strengthen exam techniques and advanced language skills in preparation for the PSLE.
How does Primary English help with the PSLE?
As children progress through the programme, they develop the language, comprehension, writing and critical thinking skills required for upper primary and the PSLE. Lessons include engaging activities and meaningful practice that help children apply what they learn with confidence.
Does Primary English include online practice?
Yes. Every student has access to ICR Quest, I Can Read’s interactive eLearning platform. It provides level-based worksheets and language activities that reinforce classroom learning while giving children additional practice in grammar, vocabulary and other key English skills.
How do I know if the Primary English programme is suitable for my child?
Primary English is suitable for children in Primary 1 to Primary 6. Before joining, every child completes an English Assessment to help identify their current strengths, learning gaps and areas for improvement. This enables our teachers to better understand your child’s needs and provide the right support throughout the programme.
