Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Champion Readers programme?
Champion Readers is I Can Read’s reading programme designed to help children become confident, independent readers. Through a structured approach, children develop decoding, reading fluency, comprehension, grammar and communication skills while building the confidence to read with understanding and express themselves with purpose and meaning.
How is Champion Readers structured?

Champion Readers is I Can Read’s reading programme and a one-year journey comprising six progressive levels that guide children from learning to decode words confidently to becoming independent readers.

In Champion Readers 1 to 3, children learn to read using I Can Read’s unique diacritical marking system, helping them decode unfamiliar words while building vocabulary and spelling skills through an understanding of letter-sound relationships.

In Champion Readers 4 to 6, the diacritical markings are gradually removed as children transition to independent reading. They strengthen their reading fluency, comprehension, grammar and writing skills, becoming confident readers who can understand and communicate with purpose and meaning.

Who is Champion Readers for?
Champion Readers is suitable for children who are ready to develop their reading, comprehension and communication skills. Placement is based on each child’s literacy ability rather than age, with an English Assessment used to determine the most appropriate programme and starting level.
What comes after Champion Readers?
Children can continue to Headstart to Primary 1 to prepare for Primary School English, and then Primary English (P1–P6 enrichment), keeping a continuous pathway through primary school.
Is there a free assessment?
Yes. Book a free English assessment at any I Can Read centre in Singapore, and we will recommend the right level for your child.

These are all important aspects of how a well-run enrichment centre should be.
